Congratulations to Aleq DuPuy, an OR Travel Nurse with Republic Health Resources.

Aleq DuPuy is our Featured Travel Nurse of the Month for August 2018. Her permanent state of residence is Tennessee. She is currently on a travel nurse assignment in San Francisco.

We asked Aleq to share her experience and adventures as a Travel Nurse…

How long have you been traveling?

1.5 years

What has been your favorite city/town to work in?

Little Rock, Arkansas

What do you love most about being a Travel Nurse?

I love the flexibility! I love that I can choose where I want to go next and I can take off as much time as I want in between my assignments. I also love exploring new cities and gaining valuable experience beyond what I would have received outside of travel nursing.

Describe your most memorable Travel Nursing Experience.

During an assignment I was circulating a surgery in the OR and the surgeon requested blue dye. Hurriedly, I drew it up in a syringe and I attempt to push it. However, as I am pushing, I used too much pressure and the blue dye squirts everywhere (including the surgeon’s shoes). Talk about a first impression!

What advice do you have for a first-time traveler?

I remember being so terrified the night before my first assignment that I was trying to figure out how I could get out of the assignment before daybreak. By the end of that first week, I was so happy that I took the plunge. And by the then end of the assignment, I had so much more confidence in myself and my skills that I didn’t have before.

So, to the travel newbie: it might be scary at first, but stick with it and I promise, you will look back and be so happy that you made the jump.

Always be yourself and be nice! Being the new person isn’t always easy and there will be obstacles but remember you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

Don’t be the unteachable traveler. If you have decided to make the leap into traveling, then you are probably very qualified. However, every hospital is different and there is always something new to learn.

“Be flexible and open yourself up to new ways of doing things.” – Aleq DuPuy
